Jaguars 3, Hurricanes 2
Zach’s first soccer game of the season was a victory for his team! The Jaguars were down 2-1 for quite some time, when in the last few minutes of the game the Jaguars rallied and came out on top. Both teams did a fantastic job. The kids are actually starting to look more like little athletes than like little kids trying to make contact with a ball.
I was really impressed with Zach’s performance. He played left wing in the first half (about 14 minutes into the half he went in and stayed ’til half-time). He had possession of the ball quite a bit and was able to dribble past several kids. Fancy foot-work my boy! Fancy foot-work! He had some good passes and almost had a goal (inches). It was also apparent he was one of the fastest, if not the fastest, kids on the field.
He played goalie the entire second half. I was a little concerned when the Hurricanes got a penalty kick. I’m not a soccer guy so I’m not quite sure how to articulate it, but they allowed one of the opposing team to kick for a goal while both teams stood and watched. Kind of like a free-throw. It was Zach and the opponent, mano y mano. An announcer might have said something like this:
The kick. The kick is good. Bam! Caught by Benfield. No goal!
In the end, he’d only allowed one goal. He stopped many others.
The other team had a couple really big kids fielded (relatively speaking). I think these were supposed to be 5th graders only - the other kids could’ve been 6th grade or better. They had some power behind their kicks too. But in the end, smaller heads prevailed.
It was a good time. Very hot, but good. I’ll be uploading some pics of the game once I slurp them off the camera.
