Spelunking, Landscaping, Discovering, and Breaking

A little bit about our Labor Day weekend…

Saturday we took a family trip to Luray Caverns. You can find some photos of the trip here, if you’re interested. If you’re not interested, you can still find them there. That was more of a statement of fact than it was a conditional. Silly and superfluous words aside, it was a pretty cool experience.

I was surprised that the little kids didn’t freak. Well, they did when the lights were shut off and we found ourselves 150 feet below the surface of the earth in absolute darkness. But otherwise, they did great. I’d be lying if I told you that I didn’t have a little anxiety when that happened. But for the record, I didn’t cry. Only Matthew and Joshua. Really.

The lights went out three or four times during our tour (the light switches are located right along the hand rail, d’oh!). It was funny because each time it happened people had the same reaction. Everyone drew there cell phones almost as quickly as the outlaw Jose Wales drew his six-shooters. MOTORAZR’s everywhere - from pocket to open flip in one fluid motion - ad-hoc flashlight, illuminated path, cave-darkness defeated. Yes, modern man always has a flashlight close at hand! Thank you Motorola.

On Sunday we really didn’t do much. In fact, we overslept and missed church - blowing the narrow window in which our family of six can get ready and still be there on time (or within 30 minutes of on time).

Today we took on the large garden area in the front of the house. We cleared weeds and then put down ten bags of red cedar mulch. I did a lot of weed-wacking too, which is always fun.

In the process of putting down the mulch, we uncovered the lost city of Atmantis! There were three really large Praying Mantis that strolled out of the bushes while we were working. I was able to take a pic of one of them and shared it in my previous post.

I should also mention that I think I broke my little toe on my right foot. I don’t know what my deal is lately. First, compressed disc. Now, I managed to seriously stub my little piggy - the one who cried “wee, wee, wee” and all of that business. It’s about twice the size it should be and a nice shade of purple.
